Canker Sores: The Ultimate Nuisance

dental supplies onlineAlthough canker sores are probably the least of one’s problems when it comes to oral health issues, they certainly are a huge nuisance. It’s equivalent to a paper cut in your mouth. How can something so small be so painful? Known as aphthous ulcers to dentists, canker sores are the most common of oral conditions –affecting up to 25% of the population with a recurrence rate of 50%.

They can appear just about anywhere inside the mouth –the tongue, inside of cheeks, base of gums, etc. Canker sores are not viral nor are they infectious. It is believed that they are hereditary. Researchers believe they might “be caused by a faulty immune system that uses the body’s defenses against disease to attack and destroy the normal cells of the mouth or tongue.” Ultimately, the cause is unknown, but there are certain triggers that may contribute including stress, illness or infection, tissue injury, eating abrasive foods, and food allergies.

In terms of treatment, there isn’t much you can do. They can heal on their own but you may want to do something to alleviate the pain. If the sore if very large/painful, your dentist might provide you with some dentist supplies, i.e. a topical anesthetic. At home you can apply ice, rinse with Benadryl, dab milk of magnesia on the sore, and take aspirin or ibuprofen. Sadly you just have to ride out the storm, dental hygiene products or not. But it’s a good idea to at least change your toothbrush afterward to prevent another canker sore.
