Coping with Dental Anxiety

dental supplies onlineDental anxiety is fairly common among the general population. Even if someone doesn’t have a serious phobia, he probably doesn’t enjoy going to the dentist regardless. Because so many people dread the dentist and others have debilitating phobias, too many people avoid the dentist all together. And I don’t need to tell you that not going to the dentist is poor idea. Some would rather suffer with gum disease, tooth pain, and tooth loss than go. Investing in dental hygiene products will only help so much.

Research has indicated that avoiding the dentist results in more than just serious oral health issues. It can also lead to heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Almost 80% of Americans fear dentists, but only 5-10% have a serious dental phobia that keeps them from the dentist at all costs. The reasons for it are numerous and include fear of pain, feelings of helplessness, embarrassment of the condition of one’s teeth,  past bad experiences, and fear of needles and drills.

Understanding your fears and sharing them with others can help you to cope and overcome the problem. Choose a dentist that makes you feel more comfortable and communicate your fears to him. A good rapport is crucial to relieving your anxiety. Sedation dentistry can be a big help. If the phobia is really debilitating, you might need professional help.
