Treating Sleep Apnea

dental supplierSleep apnea is the cessation of breathing during sleep. Not only is this dangerous (because you stop breathing!), but it can cause disruptions in sleep as well as numerous other health problems. Sleep apnea affects more than 12 million adults and children in this country. It can contribute to high blood pressure, heart disease, and memory and concentration impairment. The worst part is a decrease in the quality of sleep, leading to constant drowsiness during the day.

But how can a dentist help with sleep apnea? Depending on the cause, a dentist may be able to provide dentist supplies to help. If your sleep apnea is caused by something blocking the airway passage, such as excessive tissue in the back of the tongue, your dentist can fix the obstruction. A dental appliance can be worn during the night if the tongue is resting on the airway or if there is an incorrect positioning of the jaw. If there is too much tissue growth, surgery will need to be performed to remove it.

The most common signs and symptoms include gasping for air/chocking during sleep and loud snoring. Other signs are painful headaches in the morning, waking with a sore throat/dry mouth, memory problems, and urinating frequently during the night. To be sure these are signs of sleep apnea, consult with a doctor or dentist first.
