Proper Dental Hygiene Products and Care During Pregnancy

dental supplies onlineIt’s amazing how many rules pregnant women must follow in order to stay healthy. Proper dental hygiene is very important during pregnancy. Hormonal changes can increase a woman’s risk of gum disease which can also affect the baby. If you are trying to get pregnant, visit the dentist beforehand to have a checkup and receive a cleaning. When you are pregnant, inform your dentist and avoid dental treatments during the first trimester and second half of the third trimester.

Avoid dental X-rays unless it is an emergency.  Pregnancy gingivitis is common so make frequent checkup appointments. Always tell your dentist if your gums are sore, there is bleeding, or there is swelling. Purchase quality dental hygiene products and follow good oral hygiene. Morning sickness is very common and you will find yourself constantly brushing your teeth. If brushing is not an option, at least rinse your mouth out very well.

Although you should avoid sugary snacks all the time, it is especially important during pregnancy. Some studies show the bacteria that causes tooth decay is passed down from mother to child. Eating properly will aid in the development of your babies teeth. Dairy products are especially good for teeth, gums, and bones. With the right dental hygiene products and proper care, you and your baby can proudly show of your pearly whites.

Common dental supplies can be used on pregnant women, including local anesthetics such as Novocain and Lidocaine. However, the use of fluoride is a very controversial with some studies showing it is safe and others showing it is not. However, most dentists agree that a normal fluoride treatment should be okay.  Cosmetic procedures and major dental work should be postponed until after the pregnancy.
