Tooth Whitening Myths

Tooth discoloration (which is just a more friendly way of saying “gross yellow teeth) is commonly attributed to smoking, coffee, tea, soda and wine. The truth is, tooth discoloration is as much about genetics as it is about what you put in your mouth.

There are a series of dental hygiene products designed to help whiten your teeth.  But with nearly every single toothpaste offering advanced “tooth whitening technology,” it’s hard to wrap your head around what’s-what. So we’ll take a look at some of the major tooth discoloration and whitening myths.

My Dentist Can’t Get Anything I Can’t Get: A lot of people believe over-the-counter dentist supplies that promise whiter teeth are just as effective as any materials your dentist can provide. This is simply not true. Your dentist is not trying to scam you, he or she just has legitimately better technology than you do.

This Will Take WEEKS! Not true. Yes, a lot of the simpler dental hygiene products with weaker whitening technology typically take a few weeks before results become apparent. However, if you consult your oral hygienist, he or she will have dentist supplies that provide dramatic results in less than an hour!

This Will Last a Lifetime: Come on… what in this world lasts forever? Just like a garden, your white teeth need to be maintained. Most whitening treatments have easy-to-do follow-up treatments for home that will help you maintain that beautiful bright smile.
